HLA-B27 DNA Typing
Screening Test for Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS)
This HLA B27 test is used to screen for the autoimmune condition known as Ankylosing Spondylitis, or AS. In AS, chronic inflammation promotes joint destruction and fusion. Generally seen in males 20-40 years old, symptoms of AS include:
- Joint pain that may wake you
- Joint pain that is relieved with exercise
- A slight elevation in body temperature
- Eye inflammation
- Weight loss without a change in diet or physical activity
AS seems to have a strong HLA B27 genetic component, however, since the environment determines whether or not genes are expressed, great steps can be made to lower the risk of activating the gene.
Who is The HLA B27 Test For?
The HLA B27 test should be ordered if you have the above symptoms and/or a family history of autoimmune diseases like AS, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, Hashimoto’s Thyroid, or Lupus.
