The most common cause of an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) is an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto’s. Since testing for Hashimoto’s is non-standard medical practice, it is rarely tested. This blood test includes a TSH test AND testing for thyroid hormones like free T4 and free T3 (“free” meaning unbound to protein). Also included in this test panel are both TPO antibodies and TGB antibodies. These tests screen for the antibodies responsible in autoimmune Hashimoto’s Disease. |
