CPK Blood Test | Isoenzymes
The creatine phosphokinase (CPK) test allows one to see if heart, lung, brain, and/or muscle tissue are damaged. Elevated levels of CPK can be caused by heart attacks, crush injuries, myocarditis (heart inflammation), muscular dystrophies, brain injury / stroke, and or lung damage due to a pulmonary embolism (clot).
What’s being tested:
- CPK-1 (also called CPK-BB) is found mostly in the brain and lungs
- CPK-2 (also called CPK-MB) is found mostly in the heart
- CPK-3 (also called CPK-MM) is found mostly in skeletal muscle
